I’ve finally resolved the technical difficulties that resulted in woodpress being temporarily unavailable. It appears that MySQL 5.0.36 was incompatible with the version of libc I had installed, but Debian Sarge unstable’s dependencies didn’t reflect that. To upgrade to the latest libc, I had to also upgrade the kernel.

Fireworks

I guess it’s been about a year since I started this weblog. One of my earliest posts was around Independence Day, with a photo of my kids watching us light fireworks. We did fireworks with our kids again tonight, because… it’s Independence Day. I took pictures again. Here’s one:

That picture is hosted on Flickr instead of my web server. I’m considering going with that approach for future posts.

I moved this weblog’s official URL (or URI if you’re hip) again. I expect this one to last quite a while. It’s www.woodpress.org. I plan to keep redirects around indefinitely.

At the risk of sounding like I think people care about such things… the official Woodpress URL has changed from http://www.snark.com/~woody/wordpress/ to http://www.snark.com/woodpress/

This change shouldn’t break anything because the old URL will redirect.

I’m announcing it just in case something somewhere DOES break, in which case changing the URL should fix it. (I’d be interested in knowing of anything that breaks… please comment on this post if you encounter a problem that you think was caused by the URL change.)

As far as my reasons for changing the URL (at further risk of seeming like I think someone cares)…

It’s a simpler URL to tell friends. (It’s shorter and includes no tilde.)
Naming the directory after the weblog itself (Woodpress) seems more appropriate than naming it after the weblog software (WordPress).
I’m a rebel, and they say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

So, all of a sudden I have WordPress set up. Now I have to decide exactly what to do with it. In no particular order, here are the sorts of things I expect to post here:

Ideas that I don’t have time to do anything about.
My photographs and other art.
My personal opinions on anything at all.
News about my family.
Updates on a href=”my business”>http://www.silkthreadllc.com.
Comments on (and links to) web pages I find particularly interesting.
Attempts at humor.

So, I guess I’ll set up categories for that stuff.
