A Very Long Insect

Today my wife spotted a very long insect on our front porch. She came and told me about it, and I grabbed my camera. I don’t know what it is yet (haven’t tried to figure it out yet), but here are a couple photos.

Also, I’m posting with Windows Live Writer for a change. Last time I tried it, I think I had issues with it… but I figure it’s worth another shot.

I cut a bell pepper. It looked like it had a face. I added eyes and a uvula.

It might be fun to spend more time on something like this and try to make something that qualifies as more than a doodle.

Iceland Volcano

I recently went to Norway for what was supposed to be a week, but turned into nearly two weeks due to the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland. To escape the ash cloud, we actually flew into Iceland. On the way, I was able to take a picture of the volcano from the airplane.

Taken Aback Robot and Dragon

This taken aback robot is another result of starting with a scribble.

If I had a scanner on my desk at work (where I tend find myself doodling on sticky notes while I think about something), I could in theory scan the scribble before finishing the drawing, but that would require enough effort that it would take my mind off of whatever I was trying to think about.

Hmmm… maybe I could scribble on a bunch of sticky notes at home, scan them, then bring them in to finish. Maybe I could even get my kids to scribble on some.

I’ll throw in an extra doodle today. A dragon’s head–another of my standby subjects.

I really need to draw from reference more–not when doodling, but for more ambitious projects. In addition to improving the realism of my drawings, it would almost certainly increase my doodle subject diversity.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

As a child, I was always told that Cinco de Mayo was Mexican Independence Day, but according to Wikipedia, Cinco de Mayo is actually in celebration of the Battle of Puebla, and isn’t widely celebrated in Mexico. (Mexican Independence Day is September 16.)

In celebration of the Mexican Army’s victory over the French collection agency at the Battle of Puebla, here’s a sad reptile.

It’s celebratory (even though he’s sad) because it’s not one of my standard uninspired doodles. Still, he’s sad (maybe he’s French), so here’s a bonus.

I think she looks a little like Olive Oyl, and a little like a muppet. To escape the standby doodles, I started this one by scribbling on the sticky note. After that, I turned it different ways until I saw a picture… then I finished it.

Profiles of bald men are another thing (in addition to eyes, which I mentioned in a previous post) that I tend to draw when I’m not feeling creative.

This uninspired doodling isn’t sustainable, though. I’m just getting the stand-by doodles out of the way.
