Google Talk… spyware?!

Recently, my Google Talk silently updated itself (hey!). This update apparently removed the ability to disable idle detection, resulting in Google Talk advertising me as being available to chat whenever I touch my computer.

I turn off idle detection because sometimes (often, in fact) when I’m using my computer, I don’t want to talk to anyone. Sure, I could log out of Google Talk or set myself as busy… but I don’t need Google to know my usage patterns, and I don’t mind people saying stuff to me even if I’m busy. I just don’t want to feel obligated to answer right away.

I spent a few minutes looking for the option to disable this invasion of my personal privacy, but didn’t find it… so I uninstalled Google Talk. Oh well.

Photography update

I haven’t taken many pictures recently. The weather has been uncooperative, and I’ve been busy with work… but I did recently buy a few really inexpensive lenses that ought to help me get better insect photos. Specifically, the new lenses allow me to be farther from the subject while still getting the same level of detail. I’m really looking forward to trying them out when the bugs come back out to play.

Picture of Me

My wife took a picture of me recently while we were at a Chinese restaurant. Since I’m usually behind the camera, it’s rare to get pictures of myself. This one actually turned out reasonably well, so I’m posting it.

Baba Cuteness and Bad Parking

My youngest kid found some baba nipples to play with, walked into the room, and said “look, dad! I have a baba hand!”

Sure enough…

It seems to be fully functional:

A few minutes later she made me a baba cake.

Unrelated, here are a couple pictures of a badly parked car outside the office where I work:

Is it possible that they didn’t notice one their tire was perched on the edge of the curb?

Squishy Face

Sometimes I spend time drawing with my kids. Recently I drew “squishy face” for my three year old.

Camera is FIXED!

I fixed my little baby digital camera. It took a while, but the operation was a success, and it’s all better now. Now I will have a digital camera with me at all times again. Phew!

Camera Update… and Flickr

I found a replacement LCD on eBay for my pocket digital camera. Soon I’ll be taking pictures again.

In the meantime, I’ve been uploading old photos to Flickr. I’m uploading all my digital photos, which (with the current upload limit of 2 Gigabytes per month) will take about three years… assuming I stop taking photos now.

Since I’m posting my entire photo collection, most of them are private for friends/family, which means that if you want to see them, you’ll need to create a flickr account.
